Gardenburger Meatless Riblets

We are true carnivores. And we like nothing more than to stick our heads in a giant plate of saucy ribs. Yum! But a loss of total control like that can set you back about a thousand calories if you're not careful. If you love ribs, give these soy-based BBQ sauced swaps a try. Gardenburger has done an awesome job with their rib substitute. Even the name is cute: "Riblets." (Tee hee). But forget the adorable name -- they TASTE fantastic! Eat them alone, or nestle one in a wonder light bun and top it with rinsed coleslaw (a little trick to get rid of the fatty mayo). Tony Roma, eat your heart out!

Gardenburger Flame Grilled veggie burgers

Review by Erin Pavlina/VegFamily

If you miss the taste of charbroiled hamburgers, you're in luck! Gardenburger now has a veggie burger that tastes just like those burgers you used to grill on the barbecue.

These Flame Grilled burgers have a great texture; they hold together very well and are not at all mushy. The flavor runs deep through every bite. I enjoy these burgers on a nice whole grain bun, with all the trimmings: ketchup, grilled onions, tomato, lettuce, pickles, and my secret sauce - 1000 Island dressing from Follow Your Heart.

I gave one to my mother recently and she was stunned by how much it tasted like real meat. To some that may be a turn off. But for those of you who like that flame grilled flavor, your ship has come in!

The Gardenburger website mentions that the burgers are actually flame grilled and that the char marks are real! So the next time someone says, "We're having a barbecue," you'll know what to bring! Cruelty-free and delicious! What can be better?

Gardenburger Meatless Riblets

Review by Erin Pavlina/VegFamily

Gardenburger has really outdone themselves with this product. The meatless riblets are outstanding, but if you don't like products that taste too much like real meat, you'll want to stay away from these beauties.

The riblets look like a rack of four boneless ribs. You heat them in a bag in the microwave or you can barbecue them on a grill. The tangy and smoky barbecue sauce that covers the riblet is incredibly delicious. The riblet itself has the same texture as meat, and for a moment you may wonder if you got the right product. The fact that this product tastes and looks so much like real ribs may be a little disturbing to some people, but if you miss the taste of barbecued ribs, you'll get over that fast.

These would be great to take on a barbecue or picnic. Or put the riblet on a sandwich roll with some red onions and romaine lettuce. This is one of the best fake meat products I've ever tasted. I couldn't find this product at my local health food store, I had to get it at a mainstream store, so look around for them. You can also visit the Gardenburger website to find a location near you. The riblets will impress even the non-vegans in your life!

New game at the ballpark

Phillies add vegetarian menu to its lineup

By Vance Lehmkuhl

A PHILLIES-Brewers home game a few weeks ago was an historic occasion: The Phils won 6-2, not only sweeping the Brewers, but completing the team's most successful homestand ever - 12 wins and one loss.

But for a couple of dozen fans that afternoon, the day was momentous for another reason - they were attending specifically to experience the new vegetarian menu offered for the first time at Citizens Bank Park this season.

The menu has been adopted thanks to the efforts of Scott Geiger of Club Veg, a local 80-member group established in 1999 to promote the health and other benefits of a plant-based diet.

Geiger, an Abington native who worked tirelessly with the ballpark to bring the options to fans, has helped give vegetarians something more substantial than, say, peanuts and Cracker Jack when they're at a game.

Those of us who were roped into attending our first Phillies game (myself included) for "Club Veg Day at the Phillies" may not have followed every play as fervently as the average fan, but we had a great afternoon, and the tasty food was a big part of the appeal.
